Omar Robles is a photographer that has been capturing the beauty of ballet dancers across the world. From New York to Guatemala to China, the lensman has allowed professional dancers to be seen outside of traditional theater stages by shooting them in city landscapes.

Although he has shot around the globe, most of his work is done in Latin America because he is Latino. His latest shoot, done back home in Puerto Rico, is a very personal one — and it is breathtaking.

"When you think of dance, you hardly think of Latin America."

In an interview with The Huffington Post, Robles explained that dance culture needs more attention in South and Central America. He also acknowledged that monetary costs involved in learning ballet are so high that poorer regions in Latin America simply don't have access to it.

"When I was in Guatemala and Cuba, where there’s not the same amount of resources, I saw a different [dance] technique," he said. "Whereas in Mexico, there’s much more money; in Cuba, there’s probably less money than even in Guatemala. But the quality of dancers [in Cuba] is outstanding ― that’s because it’s prioritized."

For this project he photographed four different women across San Juan.

He added, "It’s within our roots. I think Latinos, we are very dramatic; we always express in very dramatic forms."

In his own blog post, he mentioned that his visits to the island are oftentimes due to a family emergency. With this series he was hoping to bring his home back with him in a new light.
