February is the month of amor, and for Latinas, we enjoy showing love toward significant others, family, and friends. Feeling loved and being in love is one of life’s best feelings. However, whatever your relationship status is, you must also remember to love yourself. For many of us, we love the mujer we’ve become and who we are, but do you also love yourself at work? The average person spends 90,000 hours on the job over a lifetime — an equivalent of 10.3 years! Since we typically spend most hours of the week at work, doesn’t it make sense to include some much-needed self-love in there as well? Here are four ways to show yourself some love at your job.

Advocate for yourself

There may be jobs that don’t turn out the way you expected them to be. For example, maybe you still haven’t received the promotion you believe you’ve earned, or you receive little or no feedback from your supervisors to help you maximize performance. It’s time to speak up!

Talk to your supervisor about why you deserve a promotion or that you would like more feedback to help you be the best employee you can be. People aren't mind readers –– they may just need a small nudge from you to steer them in the right direction. By advocating for yourself, you’re reminding yourself your career is important to you.

Take care of your health

While your career may be a priority in your life, so should your health. Feeling sick but trying to push through at work? Take a day off to get your health back on track. Not resting will only make your illness worse. I know, easier said than done. I’m actually writing this from home on a sick day after trying to push through at work last week. By not taking a day or two of rest, I ended up getting sicker. Lesson learned.

Feeling exhausted after working a 10-hour work day? Go home and relax. Working while you’re tired won’t help you produce your best work. A good night’s rest will refresh you for the next day. 

Make time for your personal life

Do you feel like your personal relationships are suffering because of your work schedule? Set up boundaries — it’s okay to leave work early if your responsibilities are completed on schedule. Make time for date nights, family dinners, or your kid’s after-school activities. A happy personal life makes a positive impact on your attitude at work, which is a win-win situation for everyone. Show your personal life some love by finding a work/life balance.

Be proud of your accomplishments

No one likes an arrogant person, but there is nothing wrong with being proud of your accomplishments. Did you ace a client presentation? Did you receive a promotion or raise? Did your boss let you know your work performance is exceeding expectations? If you said yes to any of those questions, be proud and celebrate all your efforts and hard work! Go to happy hour with coworkers to celebrate, buy yourself some wine, or schedule a massage and treat yourself. There is no need to feel ashamed about being proud of what you've done. You’ve earned it, amiga!

While it is nice be loved and to express love toward others, remember that there is one person who needs your love the most during the workday: the person staring back at you in the mirror.
