Countless celebrities have spoken out about the struggles of being Afro-Latina in Hollywood – from dealing with identity issues to discrimination to everything in between.

Unfortunately, Afro-Latinas are also put under the microscope when it comes to their hair. They're often expected to trade in their "pelo malo" for flat, shiny locks. But one fitness star is abandoning that social norm for the sake of her daughter, so she can understand Afro-Latina culture.

Dominican health and wellness guru Massy Arias, better known as Mankofit, has dedicated 2017 to juggling her career and her newborn baby.

The 29-year-old star welcomed baby Indi in February of this year, and since then has been speaking out about her experience raising a mixed daughter.

Massy knows that a major factor in Afro-Latina culture is hair, which is why she chose to make a huge statement in honor of her daughter.

"Yesterday I chopped it all off so I can be all natural," Arias wrote on a photo of her newly short locks.

When I was 9 years old I asked my mom why my hair was curly and hers straight. I’m sure being a busy mom and having a different hair type than mine, my mom did what she thought was best for her lifestyle. Yesterday I chopped it all off so I can be all natural. Because I am more than my hair! I want indi to understand her heritage and relate to me. I want her to feel beautiful in her own skin. I got tired of straightening my hair with heat, perms, and putting my scalp under so much stress being that I have mild scalp psoriasis. So let’s see how I adapt to my natural hair and see these curls come in. STAY TUNED FOR THE YOUTUBE VIDEO WHERE I’LL BE SHARING THE WHOLE PROCESS WHERE @amenabelledesoleil CHOPS IT UP. What products do you guys recommend? Let’s hear them. I need tons of advice and I’m sure I have lots to learn. Thank you @simplybiancaalexa @sunkissalba for all the advice. A ver? Tomo notas! #hijadecristo

"I am more than my hair! I want indi to understand her heritage and relate to me. I want her to feel beautiful in her own skin," she added to the caption. She also explained that the constant maintenance required for her hair was getting exhausting.

The fitness star did acknowledge, however, that learning to accept your natural hair is a process.

She shared a second photo of her new 'do and wrote, "Still figuring out this hair and what products are best for it. Not going to lie, I feel liberated. So happy I did it."

Arias' fans unanimously supported her decision for the good of her little one:

Hopefully this inspires more Afro-Latinas to embrace their natural hair and represent the culture proudly.
