Here’s something to celebrate — July 24th is Jennifer Lopez’s birthday! The Puerto Rican is turning 46 years old, and while we pick our jaws off the floor, we thought we’d share some of our favorite quotes on owning your Latina identity to true beauty to confidence. You know what they say, with age comes wisdom… and apparently reverse aging.
On Being Latina
“I’ve never tried to hide the fact that I'm Latina, I think that’s why Hispanics are like, ‘She’s ours; she’s out there, but she belongs to us’ — and that’s true. With the Latino community, I am theirs. I do belong to them — that’s who I am.”
"You've gotta do things that make you happy. As women, we tend to give away a lot. We take care of a lot of people, and we can't forget to take care of ourselves, if that means once a week you're going to go off without the kids or without anybody and just go shoe shopping…or get a facial even if your sister thinks that's selfish...you've just got to do it."
On Being Yourself
“Everything I wanted before, I want twice as much now. And that doesn't mean material things; it means to explore more, to think more. Being an artist doesn't start because you're 21, and it doesn't end because you're 51. You are who you are until the day you die.”
On Latin Culture
"I think the world is fascinated with Latin culture because we have a certain passion that just doesn't exist in other cultures, it has to do with the beat and the rhythm inside of us; it's just different than anywhere else in the world. When people hear our music, they hear the soundtrack of who we are and it just fills me in a way that no other music does."
On True Beauty
"Beauty is only skin deep. I think what’s really important is finding a balance of mind, body and spirit.”
“When I was in my 20s I wasn't sure of myself. Now I can really stretch. I don't have to stay in the box. At this point I can say to myself, so what if I fall, so what? I'm going to get back up.”
On Being Real
“Don’t be fooled by the rocks that I got. I’m still, I’m still Jenny from the block. Used to have a little, now I have a lot. No matter where I go, I know where I came from – South side Bronx!”
