It's a sad day in Shondaland for fans of Grey's Anatomy's orthopedic surgeon Dr. Callie Torres. After ten years playing the character on the show, Mexican actress Sara Ramirez released a statement announcing that she would be saying goodbye to her role and "taking some welcome time off.” Ramirez hinted that she may not be gone forever (she didn't get the McDreamy treatment, so that's a good sign) and also expressed her gratitude for the years she spent with show creator Shonda Rhimes and the Grey's crew:
“Shonda’s been so incredible to work for, and we will definitely continue our conversations! I send my love to Ellen, the rest of the cast and crew, and I look forward to always being a part of the Shondaland family!” Ramirez said.
Ramirez will be sorely missed. Despite the show having a remarkably diverse cast, Ramirez was the only Latina presence. Her character Dr. Torres also stood in for another underrepresented community in television as a bisexual character who had relationships with both men and woman during her stint at Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital. Rhimes' statement on Ramirez's departure gives us a feeling that she agrees with the character's meaningful impact on the show:
“Dr. Callie Torres came into our lives dancing it out in her underwear almost a decade ago, and I could not be happier or more proud of her journey. Sara Ramirez’s performance inspired me as well as millions of fans each week. We wish her the best on her well-deserved time off. I will miss Callie tremendously, but am excited for what the future holds for Sara. She will always have a home at Shondaland.”
Torres experienced many heartbreaks on Grey's Anatomy that made those dancing in her underwear moments fall to the wayside. But what lies ahead for the character (Spoiler alert: Moving to New York to share custody of her daughter with her ex-wife) may have her come full circle if she ever returns to the show. While we wait for the chance to see Ramirez's fate in future seasons, let's remember the good old days when Torres danced her way onto our TV sets in the clip below.
