After a truly cringe-worthy appearance at the Golden Globes, many in the Latino community have had a major problem with Sofia Vergara. Mocking Spanish accents again? Really? In this tense political climate, nobody has time for antics that make Latinos look dumb.
Fortunately, it seems like Vergara has been listening — as her incredible speech at the People's Choice Awards showed.
Vergara won the People's Choice Award for favorite comedic TV actress, and began her speech "My English is not going to be so good this time, so sorry."
But instead of leading into yet another wisecrack, Vergara said "Never in a million years, I thought that with this ridiculous accent I was ever going to be able to be part of something so successful, something so loved by all of you, as Modern Family."
Vergara went on to express her gratitude for the life-changing experience that "Modern Family" has been — both for herself, and for others. Her role of Gloria has opened "so many doors for other Latin actors."
But there's still so much more work to do. "We need so many more doors to be opened. Please keep giving us opportunities, because we will not disappoint you."
We were so proud to see Vergara use her platform to deliver a serious message about Latino representation in Hollywood.
Making ourselves, our accents, and our heritage a tacky punchline is NOT the only way for Latinos to make it in Hollywood.
