The popular '90s TV series Xena: Warrior Princess is getting a modern upgrade — in more ways than one. The show’s executive producer has confirmed that Lucy Lawless's character of Xena will be openly gay in the series reboot, NME reported.
“There is no reason to bring back Xena if it is not there for the purpose of fully exploring a relationship that could only be shown subtextually in first-run syndication in the 1990s," producer Javier Grillo-Marxuach, said, according to the article.
Since the show became a hit in the mid-'90s, fans speculated about the relationship between Xena and her female friend, Gabrielle, assuming they were more than just two kick-ass female heroines.
“There was always a ‘Well, she might be or she might not be,’
but when there was that drip of water passing between their lips in the very
final scene, that cemented it for me," Lawless, who played the
character of Xena, said to Lesbian News back in 2003. "Now it wasn’t
just that Xena was bisexual and kinda liked her gal pal and they kind of fooled
around sometimes, it was ‘Nope, they’re married, man.’"
Despite some criticism from a few Internet haters, most Xena fans are really excited that now even Xena can be her authentic self.
Here are just some of the supportive reactions.
