Our Editor-in-Chief Zuania Capó and Oscar-winning actor Jared Leto have one thing in common: They love fanny packs! While Leto made headlines last week when he was spotted wearing one in New York City, Zuania has been a loyal fan of this carryall since childhood when her mom introduced them to her to keep her from losing her belongings.

Throughout her teenage years, Zuania used basic ones to stay organized. But in college she discovered more fashionable styles made by indie designers, which made her see them as more than just functional, if not chic. “I feel like it’s part of my style, my urban style, during the weekend,” says Zuania. “I have a weekend persona, and I use my curly hair with my fanny packs for some reason. When you’re using your fanny pack, it’s kind of like you’re relaxed.”

Whether you’re looking to get in on the trend, are part of the nation’s rapidly growing running and jogging population, or work in a job where you need to keep your hands free (think photographers, videographers, and more), the fanny pack can be your style statement AND lifesaver.

If you’re still on the fence, Zuania says, “Go look for one that is cool … not just a normal one but something that is a statement, and you’ll see how many people will stop you to ask you, ‘Where did you get it? Where did you get it?’ and after that you’ll feel good about your decision.” While Zuania has found some of her best ones at thrift shops, here are a few similar brands you can try.
