When notorious YouTube beauty expert Michelle Phan rocks a new trend, the world pays attention. So we can’t say we were too surprised when a video of hair stylist Guy Tang giving the social media star oil slick hair started getting a lot of attention on Facebook.
In the video below, the 28-year-old can be seen rocking long locks with subtle highlights in shades of purple, blue and green, giving her mane a gorgeous iridescent effect. We have to say, we’re kind of obsessed.
While Michelle is definitely not the first to try this trend, we can’t help but wonder if she might help take oil slick hair to a new level of popularity.
So where did oil slick hair come from? According to MTV.com, celebrity colorist Aura Friedman of Sally Hershberger Salon helmed the colorful hair trend, which first hit Instagram back in the fall.
“I've been trying to re-create gasoline or oil when it's on the ground and it rains," Friedman said in an interview with Popsugar. "I find that when you take a dark purple and a dark green and layer them one on top of the other, you end up with this iridescent feeling." She also explained that because the dye works well with darker tones, it’s an ideal way for brunettes to rock the oh-so-popular rainbow trend.
