Good news: A new study shows that the act of photographing your food might actually make it taste better than it otherwise would.
The study, which was published in the Journal of Consumer Marketing, looked at three different groups of people (each group included more than 120 participants). The first group of people were either given a slice of red velvet cake or a piece of fruit. The group with the cake was told to photograph it before eating it, whereas the group with the fruit did not photograph their food before eating it. Researchers found that the group who photographed their cake before eating it perceived it to be healthier than the fruit-eating group, who did not photograph their food before eating it.
The people in the second group were either given a slice of red velvet cake and told it was made with ingredients such as cream cheese, or they were given a slice of red velvet cake they were told was made with low-fat ingredients such as egg whites and applesauce. The results? The people in the first group rated their cake as being more decadent and rich.
Lastly, researchers examined the third group of people and discovered that once people are aware that everyone around them is eating healthy food, taking a photo of healthy food can make it taste better.
