We've got curly haired emojis and on November 9, Angolan supermodel Maria Borges made history as the first model to walk the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show with natural hair. Just days prior on November 7, Afro-Brazilians in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil, took to the streets to participate in a natural-hair empowerment march, Marcha do Empoderamento Crespo. Looks like the natural-hair movement is finally taking center stage.
Thousands of people attended this march with the intention of combating prejudice against Brazilians of African descent. As march organizer Naira Gomes explained, "Hair is a symbol, a pretext to fight against racism." Afro-Brazilians are currently the majority in Brazil, yet racism is still rampant for blacks in the country. Movements like this are important for the marginalized yet huge community to feel empowered and to strive for the proper recognition and respect they so richly deserve.
