The community of Anaheim, California has been in chaos after video surfaced of an off-duty cop pulling out and shooting his gun during an altercation with a 13-year-old Latino on Tuesday, February 21.

Protesters took to the streets the following night after the cop faced no immediate consequences, while the 13-year-old boy named Christian Dorscht and an unidentified 15-year-old boy were arrested. There were also more than a dozen minors taken in as witnesses.

The incident began when a teenage girl stepped on the unidentified officer’s lawn while walking home from school. The officer called the girl a “cunt,” according to Dorscht, which is when he stepping in to defend her. The situation quickly escalated when the officer became physical with Dorscht, who was grabbed by the neck and pulled.

There were 24 protesters arrested after 300 Californians came together to demand justice for Dorscht. Windows of cars and homes were broken. Houses were also vandalized with red spray paint that read, “Kill the cops,” and “Fuck pigs,” according to OC Weekly. This happened amidst confusion about where the unknown officer lived.

During the protest, there were four Anaheim police officers spotted and water bottles were thrown at them. Protestors then went on to blocking traffic at a nearby intersection and shouting, “No justice, no peace, no racist police!” Officers confronted the group for an hour in which protesters shouted insults and took out bongs.

Arrests were made after Anaheim helicopters called for people to disperse. “If you hear this, chances are you will be arrested,” they announced. But 150 protestors remained and were met by police in riot lines. In the end, there were 24 people arrested: 10 men, eight women, three boys, and three girls.

Several videos of the confrontation have been posted on social media. In the footage, friends of the Latino student can be seen coming to his defense. One individual pushed the officer over bushes while another tried to free Dorscht. The officer held tightly onto the teenager while he took out his gun and fired.

Although no one was hurt by the gunfire, Americans across the country are outraged that the officer wasn’t arrested at the scene.

Dorscht was taken into custody for battery and criminal threats, which he denies. During the altercation, the teenager of Mexican descent reportedly said:

"I’m going to sue you for hitting me. I’m a minor."

The officer claims to have heard “shoot” instead of “sue” and felt the need to take out his gun to defend himself. Johnny Dorscht, the father of the teenager, plans to sue. He told OC Weekly:

"We’re going to find legal representation and be suing. This is B.S. Even the cops, when they got there, they had all the kids down. They didn’t even go after the guy."

According to the DailyMail, the teenage girl who began the incident has already filed a lawsuit against the City of Los Angeles and its police chief, Charlie Beck, for verbal abuse and threats by the unknown officer. The unidentified 15-year-old has also sued the City of Anaheim and its police chief, Raul Quezada. The teenager claims he was physically assaulted by Anaheim officers who were called to the scene.
