It's official: the #MACSelena collaboration has made history as the biggest launch in the brand's history.

As members of the Latinx community (and massive Selena Quintanilla fans), we could not be more proud of its blockbuster success.

Not only did the collab sell out in record time, it literally broke the internet. Trust me, I know. Not even MAC was prepared for fans to wipe this collection out the way they did.

But while we've all been psyched for our Como La Flor lipstick, we can't forget that this collaboration was the passion project of one man — and he really isn't getting enough credit.

This is José Antonio Figueroa: makeup artist, HUGE Quintanilla fan, and the person responsible for the entire #MACSelena collection.

Over a year and a half ago he posted an image of a red MAC Lipstick photoshopped with an image of Quintanilla, her logo, with the #SELENAQUINTANILLAforMAC hashtag.

“A girl can dream....#DreamingOfYou #SELENAQUINTANILLAforMAC,” Figueroa wrote. Little did he know that he was speaking it (or should we say Instagramming it) into existence.

The image — and his idea — went CRAZY viral, with Quintanilla fans sharing it literally everywhere.

It wasn't long until his idea inspired Patty Rodriguez's Change.org petition for MAC to make this collaboration a reality. The petition says:

"As a huge fan and customer of MAC Cosmetics and Latina woman, we want MAC Cosmetics to create a line that represents the community that shops MAC make-up. Selena Quintanilla is an iconic legend in our community and would she be alive, she'd be a perfect MAC girl!"
The petition garnered nearly 40,000 signatures, and José was credited with the original idea.

That petition got MAC's attention, leading to the creation of the Quintanilla collection — but José has never been officially acknowledged for his major role.

We have to agree with Marissa Castillo (a.k.a. RissRose2), who took to her massively popular Instagram page to spread the truth.

She wrote:

Remember this markup that Jose made sometime ago and posted on my IG page? I've listened to numerous interviews and have not heard his name ONCE. He is only referred to as "the makeup artist" ???? In my opinion, he was vital [in encouraging MAC to give] this iconic woman a collection. It is now the biggest to ever launch."

Despite being shut out by the brand, Figueroa has still been really excited about #MACSelena.

"Who would have imagined creating and posting this image would lead to [Mac Cosmetics'] biggest, most anticipated collection of all time?” he wrote on Instagram.

"Even though I was not given any credit by the brand, I am so happy to see Selena and the Hispanic Community honored by a major cosmetics company."

As he says, this just goes to show "The power of Social Media, the Latino Voice, and Selena Fans."

Figueroa is proof that you should NEVER underestimate the power of your voice — and we think it's time he gets the credit he deserves.
