We should have seen this coming! On Friday, Kanye West surprised us all when he announced that he would be debuting the first single for Cruel Winter, the follow up to G.O.O.D. Music's first compilation album titled Cruel Summer that came out in 2012, on Big Boy's Neighborhood radio show.
Even Big Boy couldn't contain himself as the song played! The track was still unnamed when West premiered it, but the tentative title that is currently making the rounds is "Champions," which is very fitting since the track features seven artists that West dubbed "The Avengers of Rap": Travi$ Scott, Big Sean, Quavo, 2 Chainz, Desiigner, Yo Gotti, and Gucci Mane, who was just released from jail last week after serving almost three years in jail for a probation violation. Crazy!
The track is a strong contender for song of the summer, with West rapping the line "I'm 'bout to go Gucci in the Gucci store" that made any hip-hop fan familiar with these rappers' public personas lose it. And that's not all. The finished version of the song will feature every artist from West's G.O.O.D. Music label. According to The Fader, West said, "We're going to do a version of that song with 12 or 15 minutes, everybody."
Rumors of a follow-up to Cruel Summer started circulating when collaborator Fonzworth Bentley posted a video on Snapchat showing West and Sean in the studio with the hashtag #CruelWinter.
This track definitely has us excited for the album. Today was a G.O.O.D. Friday indeed.
Will you be bumping to "Champions" this summer?
