Even though I've never had a problem with my thinner, smaller lips, I have to admit that I'm curious about how I'd look if they were a bit fuller and plumper.
I blame my curiosity on the Kylie Jenner Kool-Aid everyone has been drinking, as well as those viral lipstick application videos that put you in a trance.
BIG. LIPS. ARE. EVERYWHERE.
Granted, many of these viral lip stars have had injections, which there is NOTHING wrong with, but it's not a solution for my casual curiosity. Instead, I opted to make my own DIY lip plumper to see if I could get similar-ish results.
This is my "before" picture, so you can see what I'm working with up close and personal.
And these are the ingredients that promise to take my lips to the next level.
After looking through about a dozen DIY lip plumper recipes, I came across "The Bomb Lip Plumper," which called for things I already had in my cupboard.
The recipe lists "your preferred oil" (I went with coconut), cinnamon powder, ginger powder, cayenne pepper, and peppermint oil.
The instructions said some of these spices can "irritate" the skin on the lips, so I was pretty damn nervous.
I calmed down once I realized how minimal the portions are: 1/3 teaspoon of ginger powder, 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne powder, 1/3 teaspoon of cinnamon powder, one teaspoon of coconut oil, and one drop of peppermint oil.
Then it was mixing time, baby!
You do NOT need this big of a jar, but I wanted something clear to see what the color would look like. (TBH, it made me kind of scared again.)
Surprisingly, it was a pretty smooth concoction with minimal grittiness.
I applied it to my lips and massaged it in for 20 seconds.
I didn't feel anything, so I put on another layer...
It started to BURN and I immediately questioned all the choices that led to this moment.
I had to keep it on for two to three minutes and didn't know if I was going to make it.
I also managed to get some in my teeth, which was totally, definitely, 100% not fun.
When the timer lapsed, I was happy to wipe it off to see if the stinging was worth it or not.
I was genuinely thrilled to get this stuff off my lips ASAP.
I took a good hard look at my lips and even asked my girlfriend to see if she saw any difference...
...and we both agreed that they looked pretty much the same. UGH.
Here's the before and after — you be the judge.
It did make my lips look a little fuller, but the effects disappeared in less than five minutes.
Unfortunately, my Kylie Jenner lip dream didn't turn into a reality.
Even though it was pretty much a fail, I'm going to try some other DIY lip plumpers and see if there's something out there that works for me.
For now, my little lips will just have to do.
