Update: At least 16 states, with Republican leaders, have rejected to invite Syrian refugees.
When I first read a couple of months ago that President Obama announced we’d accept 10,000 Syrian refugees, due to the surge of violence in Syria and its neighboring countries, I thought, 'There’s no way the Republicans will allow this.' Sure enough, that seems to be the case now.
After the horrendous attacks that occurred in Paris last week, seven U.S. states’ governors refuse to accept any Syrian refugees. Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, and Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant — all Republicans — stand united against accepting innocent Syrians who’ve been caught in the crossfire. Three more Republican governors have also put their name into the "no-Syrian-refugee" hat. Said Governor Bentley:
After full consideration of this weekend’s attacks of terror on innocent citizens in Paris, I will oppose any attempt to relocate Syrian refugees to Alabama through the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program. As your Governor, I will not stand complicit to a policy that places the citizens of Alabama in harm’s way.
It’s interesting that these governors feel their citizens will be in “harm’s way” if Syrian refugees are allowed in their states. Why aren’t these governors protecting their citizens right now from their own citizens?
“Louisiana is one of only four states in the country where homicides accounted for a larger share of firearm deaths than suicides. In 2013, Louisiana reported nearly 10 homicides per 100,000 residents, the highest rate in the country,” USA Today reports. Texas has also had its fair share of mass shootings, but let’s get back to the matter at hand.
How dare these governors group innocent Syrians with the monsters that caused the Paris attacks? Please imagine, for a second, what it would be like if other politicians from other countries grouped all Americans? What would it be like if someone said: "Americans are not allowed to enter this country because they’re all gun-loving, mass murderers. We don’t want our citizens to be in harm's way because all they do is go on shooting sprees."
Governors, please do not generalize! We are not all deranged killers!
