If you're curvy and anything above a size 8, Zara stores should just be renamed to "Welcome to Heartbreak." All the "cool kids" are wearing it on the 'gram, but you'll be hard-pressed to find a wide selection of clothes there that fit properly and flatter your body. If you're plus-size, forget about it.
So when we got a sneak peek of the items in Target's new clothing line, A New Day, which serves sizes XS-4X with prices ranging from $9.99-$44.99, it felt like the gates to heaven opened up.
Finally, an affordable line with a modern and grown-up style for ALL SIZES. We had to try it!
I got an outfit that was corporate boss meets fashion — a statement shirt and black ankle pants.
My boobs have kept me from participating in this summer's fun button-down craze, so I can't tell you how happy I was when I tried this one on and it didn't feel like I was in a straight jacket.
I am typically a size 12, but I went up to an XL to accommodate my chest. I can't even button up an XL from Zara. All I needed for this shirt is a little boob tape to keep the fabric between the center buttons sealed shut.
Unfortunately, since I had to size up, the fit around the waist was a little too big. Because the shirt is very structured and crisp, a boxy silhouette just won't do and I would need to get it tailored. But I liked the style enough that I would make that effort.
The ruffle sleeves were perfect and they didn't feel too tight around my arms, which is usually a challenge.
The pants were almost a total win for me. The material felt lightweight, perfect for warmer weather. And I just love the tie detail at the waist!
The only issue I had with the pants were the pockets. They puckered open, as opposed to staying flat against the body. It's a huge pet peeve and something that I run into often because of my hips. I would need to have them sewn shut by a tailor, or I could size up from a Large to an X-Large.
Next, Jessica Torres tried another fashion-forward, powerful look.
A New Day Women's Plus Size Plaid Boyfriend Blazer ($35, Target); A New Day Women's Plus Size The Adventure Begins Graphic T-Shirt in White ($10, Target); A New Day Women's Plus Size Slim Fit Straight Leg Plaid Ankle Pants ($30, Target); A New Day Women's Birdie Pointed Low Block Heel Pumps in Black ($28, Target); A New Day Women's Tassel Clutch in Black ($22, Target)
"I have been looking for a great power suit like the one I'm trying on," Torres shared. "I was so happy to see that this brand was great at providing something like that for me."
Torres was impressed with the material of the items she picked. "It felt nice and luxurious," she said.
Torres did run into some issues with sizing.
"I sized up, and even then the outfit was way too tight. I would give this another try but I would definitely size up," she said.
"I can totally see myself wearing the items again and even exploring with other items I didn't try on."
Her reflection on her shopping experience at Zara and how it compares to A New Day really hit the nail on the head. "I once saw a meme that said, 'I'm sadder than a plus-size girl shopping at Zara,'" she shared. "I have never understood a meme so well. When I walk into Zara I immediately look down and start looking for shoes. The clothes are never big enough for me to even consider trying it on. Knowing that this brand is giving me everything I ever wanted from Zara makes me so happy. I would love to see even edgier clothes and it would be the perfect brand."
Finally, Marquaysa Battle went for a sunny look that we would live in on the weekend.
Battle was a big fan of the denim jacket she tried.
"It fit so lovely and the arms were actually long enough for me, which doesn't happen all the time since I'm so lanky," she said.
Her top pick was something all three of us agreed on. "I loved the shoes most of all because they were super cute, but more so because they were SO comfortable."
"I thought they were going to feel a little stiff to walk in, but they were the most comfy shoes ever," she added.
I was such a fan that I'm considering buying a backup pair. These shoes are that good!
Overall, Battle was impressed and said she would try other things from the collection.
"I wouldn't mind making a personal visit to Target to see more of what's in the line," she said. "It's good quality and the stuff is really, really pretty."
